This is a bird of prey and the biggest of eagle family. The wing spread is about 2 meters, the weight of male species is approximately 3 kilos; the females weigh 4 kilos. The coloration is dark-brown, the bottom is slightly lighter. The back of the neck has yellow pointed feathers. The beak is massive and dark (similar to other eagles); the paws are feathered up to the claws. It often hovers at high altitude with its remiges wide spread. The claws are very strong and big. The young birds have white tail with broad dark stripe on the side. The voice is a hoarse and husky “queck-queck” – so-called squawk that resembles bark.

It is very agile and strong predator that feeds on big-sized prey. It even attacks roe deer. The basic prey is hare, long-tailed ground squirrel and fox. The golden eagle also catches big birds such as grouse. It willingly eats carrion.

The bird is non-migratory in the south of the region; eagles of the north migrate southwards in winter. It is rare but nevertheless can be found in southern Siberia (Minusinsk kettle hole, Sayan Mountains, some regions of piedmont forest-steppe). The bird is very rare in taiga area. It is not present in the vicinity of the Norilsk Lakes and forest-steppes.

The nest is arranged on trees or on the rock and is used for many years in a row. The egg-set consists of 1-2 white eggs with bright red-brown spots.
The bird is protected as a rare species and is listed in the Red List of Russia.


It is big bird of dark-brown, almost black color. The eagle has light-yellow “cap” on the head. The voice resembles a dog bark, something like “tiaff-tiaff”. The bird is migratory species.
It feeds mostly on long-tailed ground squirrel and hare; less frequently – medium-sized birds. The eagle readily eats carrion.

The bird is common in western and northern Siberia (Yalutorovsk, Salair, Tomsk, Krasnoyarsk). It inhabits forest-steppes and steppes of taiga borders and forests of Minusinsk kettle hole. In the north it nests up to the Krasnoyarsk forest-steppe. The nests are made on lofty trees (poplars – in Krasnoyarsk forest-steppe. There are 2-3 white or yellow-red spotted eggs in a set.
Like the golden eagle, this bird is also protected and put down in the Red List.
